Perhaps you may not quite grasp the scope of these tests, which of course, despite what they might suggest to people not experienced in these psychometric techniques, are of undoubted interest.

 

Do not think that this is something magical or esoteric. The results of the test, if they are sincere and have been formulated by faithfully following the instructions, can be carefully assessed to obtain some important data reflecting the psychology of the person examined.

 

Needless to say, both the test protocol and its assessment will be kept by us in absolute secrecy. Not even the reference of the woman with her name and address will be recorded. We are carrying out a sociological analysis of sex differentiation in terrestrial society, and only the data themselves matter, not the specific persons.

 

We beg you to follow these INSTRUCTIONS faithfully:

1st We enclose a sheet of paper with three numbered pictures with the signs () = 1, ( ) = 2, () = 3. You will observe that on the right there is the same number of blank boxes or squares.

 

2nd In a room of your home where you can be completely alone and without disturbing noises, contemplate each of the pictures for FIVE MINUTES one by one, covering the others with a sheet of paper. After contemplating the first for this time (CLOCK NEARBY) write in the box on the right what SUCH AN IMAGE SUGGESTS TO YOU. You may express it in a few words, or fill the box and continue on a separate sheet of paper. Repeat the operation with the other two images (ALWAYS COVERING THE REMAINING PICTURES) Do not try to force the description, do not strive to express yourself in a literary way. SPONTANEITY IS ESSENTIAL.

 

3rd Shortly we will call you by telephone and, after asking you personally whether you have finished the test, we will hang up again to give you time to look for the paper. A few minutes later we will call again and YOU PERSONALLY will read out, QUOTING THE No. of the PICTURE, what you have written about it, IN A CLEAR VOICE AND MODULATING your voice, but making an effort to read it QUICKLY.
